College Park

Ahora daré un ejemplo de uno de los arbolitos más faltos de color y alegría que he visto en mi vida. Éste ya lleva al menos 2 años (probablemente 3). Pensé que este año cambiarían a un tema un poco más acorde con el espíritu de la Navidad, pero no. Siguen usando las mismas decoraciones... esferas negras y grises, con listones negros y plateados.

Me imagino que la idea era aparecer como elegante, pero al menos en mí, el efecto que producen es de tristeza y rebelión. ¿A quién se le ocurre decorar con negro y gris como algo apropiado a esta temporada? ¿Qué no ven lo corto que son los días, lo gris y oscuro de la estación de invierno? ¿Por qué nos hacen eso? En fin... juzguen ustedes mismos...

I just wanted to show the sad looking decorations and Xmas tree used in College Park. This has been going on for at least 2 years (possibly 3. It certainly feels longer).

In my opinion, this has to be one of the least cheerful and most inappropriate colour schemes ever used for Christmas decorations. Why would anyone use exclusively black and gray (silver, if you will)? Presumably, it might have been done so that the place looks "elegant", I imagine, but to me, it just looks sad and depressing. Unfortunately, I have to see this the whole season and every time I see them when I pass by, I still think, why would anyone choose black and gray?!?!  WHY?

Arbolitos Más Famosos - Most Renowned Trees

Cómo me llamó mucho la atención el encabezado del artículo "The Most Spectacular Christmas Trees" que apareció hoy en el sitio Gizmodo, lo fui a leer y vi que ninguno de los arbolitos de Canadá es mencionado, ya que sólo se comparan los arbolitos más famosos de los E.U.A. Los detalles y estadísticas están claramente presentados en una gráfica también. El resultado más sorprendente de la comparación es que el famoso arbolito de Nueva York que está en el Centro Rockefeller no es el más grande, pero tal parece que sí es el más brillante.

La siguiente pregunta lógica para mi es: ¿cuáles serán los arbolitos más "espectaculares" de Canadá?  Creo que esto me llevará a indagar al respecto. Tan pronto tenga algunos resultados los reportaré aquí. Tanto del arbolito de Nueva York, como de los mejores arbolitos en Canadá.

After reading a very interesting article in Gizmodo today, titled: "The Most Spectacular Christmas Trees", I was very surprised to learn that the beautiful Norway spruce used by the Rockefeller Center is not the tallest Xmas tree in the U.S.A., although it is certainly the brightest.

Now, I'm curious to find out how do our Canadian Christmas trees compare among themselves? Is there anything as iconic as the one shown above? (thanks to the great photography of Wally Gobetz, who has made this photo public in Flickr, as well as given the vital statistics and background on this tradition). 

What would be the biggest decorated Xmas tree in Canada? Which is the best known? I'd really like to find out. As soon as I come across that bit of data, I will mention it here.

Por cierto, sí hallé fotos que tomé el 4 de diciembre del 2003 cuando tuve la suerte de asistir al evento de la inauguración del pinito del centro Rockefeller. Aunque mi foto del arbolito no se compara a la de Gobetz, incluyo aquí otra vista de los arbolitos decorados en la calle #50, adyacente al principal pino del centro .

I have added the photo above just to show another personal view of this famous site, as I was lucky enough to be in New York at that time of the year in 2003. (It was in fact the start of the season, as they had the initial lightning ceremony of the tree). This picture shows the decorations of the 50th street adjacent to the center.

Aprendí varios datos además de haber tomado más fotos del "arbolito" de cristal (el cual debe medir entre 4 y 5 metros).

La tradición de este árbol tiene 30 años, según está anunciado y el número de piezas de cristal que se usan para decorarlo son más de 20,000. Este árbol es único en Canadá y parte de lo que se recauda de la venta de los ornamentos de cristal está dedicado a la organización Children´s Wish Foundation of Canada.

The photos above show a mid-range view of the Swarovski Xmas tree, as well as a "close up" so that the ornaments can be seen in more detail.

It was interesting to learn that the tradition of this Xmas tree has now 30 years and that the number of pieces used to decorate this tree (which by my estimates must measure between 4 and 5 metres) is over 20,000.

The  proceeds from the sale of the special Xmas ornaments go towards the Children's Wish Foundation of Canada. The tree is unique in the country and the best news is that the proceeds are used to grant wishes to children with terminal illnesses. A beatiful tradition, in short.

Arbolito Swarovski en el Eaton Centre Xmas Tree

Con este arbolito empiezo este blog mostrando los arbolitos que más me han llamado la atención aquí en Toronto, Canadá, durante la temporada de Navidad del 2010.

Es ya algo tradicional en el Eaton Centre pues lo he visto varios años. Está todo decorado con figuritas de cristal Swarovski y para apreciarlo bien debe uno acercarse. Luego pondré fotos aquí de algunas de las "esferitas" que lo decoran. ¡Feliz Navidad!

With this photo of the Xmas tree decorated wholly with Swarovski crystals, I start this blog. Its purpose is to show some of the Xmas trees that seemed the most interesting to me, in Toronto, Canada.

I will add later on some pictures of the actual decoractions in the tree, to give a better appreciation of this brilliant tree. Merry Christmas!
