The BBC reported last week that a "UAE hotel boasts 'most expensive Christmas tree'". It seems that this very glitzy hotel in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates) had ask the Guinness World Records to certify that their tree is the most expensive in the world, as it is worth over $11 MILLION dollars.
How could it be worth so much? When you considered that it is decorated with 181 diamonds, pearls, emeralds, sapphires and other precious stones, in addition to gold bracelets, necklaces and watches, you can imagine how it all adds up. It was reported that the 13 meter tree itself was worth a MERE $10,000, so the jewellery alone is worth $11 million.
Looking up data on the web, I learned however, that a Xmas tree set up by Piaget in Japan in Dec. 2002, still holds the record for most expensive tree, as its 83 jewellery pieces had a total cost of $10,853,597. Perhaps taking into account inflation or current dollar value, that Piaget Xmas tree still holds this record. In any case, it's so hard to believe that there had been such extravagant and exorbitant Xmas trees!
